Review #1: Stories and Sorceries Campaign 1

Writer's picture: Matthew's Nerdy NationMatthew's Nerdy Nation

If I'm going to be reviewing Actual Plays, I absolutely had to start with this one! They were the first I actually listened to regularly and the first full campaign that I completed. The storyline itself starts at what I would consider a mid campaign point. Brothers Alfie (and his best girl, Sheila) and Rolo Windrunner and their friends Edward Truffle and Ferdinand are working as hired mercenaries for the king of the land of Trivess. They have been given a lodge as their base of operations and they run it, with the help of one of the king's men, Anders, as an inn and bar. The king sends them missions with great rewards and they undertake them with gusto, such as escorting a suitor for the prince to the capital or acting as guards on a shipment of magical items. Hilarity ensues throughout, especially when it involves Rolo. Ferdinand is very absent from the story, and his space in the "Fated Four" is eventually taken by Dave, a Bugbear Barbarian (a Bugbearian?). Shortly after Ferdinand's replacement, the party ends up in a fight they are not able to win, completely by accident.

The storytelling and the settings are fabulous, as are many of the NPCs, such as Anders, Kyle, and Arthur from Arthur's Armaments. Each of the characters have wonderful interactions, whether it be with a prostitute they saved from being murdered, a pirate captain, a cargo ship's female first mate, a werewolf hunter, and a Giant stone shaper.

As they are now starting their second campaign, take the time to get acquainted with the players, the DM, and their styles by giving campaign one a listen. You can catch up on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and YouTube under Stories and Sorceries and "Have a wonderful day!"
